On Tuesday (July 22), Grateful Dead announced plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their 1975 album, Blues for Allah, with a deluxe edition set to be released on September 12. Recorded following a rare hiatus from their live performances, the experimental album will be celebrated with a 3-CD deluxe edition featuring the newly remastered album by Grammy Award-winning engineer David Glasser, along with rehearsals/soundcheck from a 1975 San Francisco show, and performances from a 1976 concert in Pennsylvania. “Blues for Allah is the Dead’s unique vision, a deeply humane parable that framed their own artistic renewal in the most inclusive, expansive terms,” Nicholas G. Meriwether, Executive Director of the Grateful Dead Studies Association, wrote in the set’s liner notes. “Fifty years later, it remains one of their most musically successful and resolutely experimental albums.” The anniversary edition will also be available in additional formats, including a vinyl picture disc and limited-edition “Midnight Fire” vinyl.
