In an Instagram post on Sunday (June 1), Questlove issued a public apology for the significant delays and chaotic conditions that plagued the first day of the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on Saturday. Heavy rain and muddy grounds at the Mann Center led to hours of delays, leading frustrated fans to chant “let us in!” while they waited outside the event. Organizers faced a last-minute scramble to revise the schedule for performances by artists such as Maxwell, Latto, Musiq Soulchild, GloRilla, and more. “I know today wasn’t “ideal” for The Roots Picnic,” Questlove wrote. “We nearly canceled because conditions were unsafe for everyone involved. Ultimately, we chose to take extra time to repair the site to ensure safety for all ticket holders, which is why there was a 3hr delay. It’s 3am and I wanna thank you for your understanding and patience through this adversity.” The festival ran more smoothly on Sunday, with the Roots performing their entire 1995 album, Do You Want More?, alongside sets by Lenny Kravitz, Funk Flex, and Meek Mill.
