The Recording Academy has announced a change to the rules for the 2026 Grammy Awards. For the first time, album artwork will be recognized with its own standalone category.
The new award is called Best Album Cover. It will honor the visual design of an album cover, regardless of musical genre. The focus is on the artwork itself, not the music or the artist’s commercial performance.
Until now, album covers were evaluated within broader design-related categories, such as Best Recording Package. This update separates the cover image from other physical or digital packaging elements. The goal is to give clearer recognition to visual creatives involved in album releases, including designers, photographers, and art directors.
