In a newly shared interview with Allison Hagendorf before their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Soundgarden’s surviving members revealed that they are nearly finished with their final album featuring late singer Chris Cornell’s vocals, recorded before his 2017 passing. The band co-produced the project alongside longtime collaborator Terry Date (Badmotorfinger, Louder Than Love), with drummer Matt Cameron revealing that the material sounds “like it was kind of a new chapter or it could have been a new chapter” for the band, while admitting that without Cornell, “It’s bittersweet, of course.” Cameron adds, “I’m really excited for people to hear it. It’s fun for us to be working on it. And sometimes listening to it, it’s overpowering. I’m super proud of the music that we did put together. And we’re pretty close [to finishing it].” Despite past legal disputes with Cornell’s widow that delayed progress, the parties reconciled in 2023, enabling completion using Chris’s vocal demos.
