The song, originally released in 1994, has steadily gained traction each year beginning in early November, driven by millions of streams and significant radio airplay. Recent changes to Hot 100 chart rules and shifting streaming trends have also contributed to its early reentry. Since first entering the Top 10 in 2017 and finally reaching No. 1 in 2019 – an achievement it has repeated each holiday season ever since – Carey’s festive classic has become a perennial Christmas fan favorite.
