The Chris Smith-directed Devo documentary, which received critical acclaim at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, will be released on Netflix on August 19. The film, simply titled Devo, delves into the formation, rise, and cultural impact of the post-punk/New Wave band, featuring rare archival footage and interviews with band members Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale, and more. The Netflix release coincides with a series of celebrations tied to Devo’s 50-plus years together – they formed in Akron, Ohio in 1973 – with the band launching a bi-weekly YouTube series called Devolutionary Times, which will feature them sharing newly restored Devo videos and films in chronological order, beginning with a nine-minute short film from 1976, The Truth About De-Evolution, which was directed by Chuck Statler. Devo also recently announced a co-headlining janut with the B-52s dubbed, The Cosmic De-Evolution Tour, which kicks off on September 24 in Toronto, and finishes on November 2 in Houston.
