Veteran Broadway actress Patti LuPone apologized for her “flippant and emotional” remarks about fellow performers Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald. The apology came after much of the New York theater community attempted to have LuPone disinvited from the Tony Awards. An open letter signed by over 500 had criticized LuPone for calling Lewis a “bi-ch” and saying McDonald is “not a friend” in a New Yorker profile. In an Instagram post on Saturday, LuPone stated, “For as long as I have worked in the theatre, I have spoken my mind and never apologized. That is changing today.” She acknowledged that her comments were “demeaning and disrespectful,” particularly those regarding Kecia Lewis. LuPone expressed regret for her “flippant and emotional responses” and said she is “devastated that [her] behavior has offended others.” She hopes to personally apologize to both women in person.
