Director Neill Blomkamp, best known for the sci-fi films District 9 and Chappie, is set to write and direct a new film adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 sci-fi novel Starship Troopers. The project will draw inspiration from the original military story rather than the hyper-violent fascist satire of the 1997 adaptation by Paul Verhoeven. That version was poorly-reviewed at the time and was a box office disappointment, but later became a cult classic that spawned two direct-to-video sequels and then a pair of animated follow-ups after that. Reports of the new version have been rumored for a decade, but Blomkamp’s involvement represents a big step forward. (Variety)
