The Bass Magazine Awards were held on Thursday (January 23) at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California. Tool bassist Justin Chancellor was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony, and he and his celebrated prog-metal bandmates surprised everyone in attendance by playing a two-song set at the event. Chancellor was previously listed as a performer in promotion for the ceremony, along with fellow bassists Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey, as well as “members of Tool.” But the entire band showed up to play at the intimate venue, as Tool performed spirited renditions of their classic hits, “Schism” and “Jambi.” Tool’s official Instagram account paid tribute to their celebrated bandmate prior to the ceremony, writing “Congratulations to our very own Justin Chancellor as he’s honored with a Bass Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his bass wizardry and alchemy with Tool, since 1995.” (Consequence of Sound)
