Miss Hawaii, Savannah Gankiewicz, accepted the Miss USA crown after the original winner’s resignation — and is already facing a wave of online bullying. Speaking at an event for wildfire victims, Gankiewicz tearfully expressed her heartbreak over the backlash. “I didn’t want to cry, but I just feel like it’s hard because I wish people saw where my heart is coming from,” she said. Hateful comments have flooded her social media, with some even making serious threats and telling her mother that they “hope your daughter gets shot & dies.” But Gankiewicz aims to carry on, hoping to show young women that despite being bullied, they can stand up and continue using their voice.
