Happy Birthday to Yoko Ono, who turns 89 today (February 18th)!!! Yoko was born in Tokyo to a musician turned extremely successful banker Eisuke Ono, who was a descendant of the Emperor of Japan. Yoko's mother, Isoko Ono, is the granddaughter of Zenjiro Yasuda, of the famed Yasuda banking family. Despite her contributions to the conceptual art world, she will forever be entwined both personally and artistically with late-husband, John Lennon. In 2020, in honor of what would have been his 80th birthday, Yoko served as the executive producer of the multi-disc solo Lennon compilation, Gimme Some Truth.
According to numerous reports, in 2020, her son, Sean Lennon, was officially appointed a director at eight companies linked to Yoko and the Beatles — including the group's company, Apple Corp. Sean has also joined the board of Lensolo, which administers his father's solo works.
Ono, who has been wheelchair-bound for several years, is rumored to have suffered from a stroke, although no illness has been publicly revealed. Released today in celebration of Yoko's birthday is the new tribute album, titled, Ocean Child: Songs Of Yoko Ono. The collection features selections by Death Cab For Cutie, David Byrne, Yo La Tengo, Japanese Breakfast, Sharon Van Etten, and the Flaming Lips, among others.
