Sly & The Family Stone will be the subject of a new documentary by the Roots' Questlove, according to Variety. The still-untitled project follows Questlove's 2021 directorial debut, Summer Of Soul (. . . Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), which scored both the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award..
Questlove said in a statement announcing the project, “It goes beyond saying that Sly's creative legacy is in my DNA. It’s a black musician’s blueprint. To be given the honor to explore his history and legacy is beyond a dream for me.” No release date for the new doc has been announced.
Sly Stone's sister — and Family Stone bandmate — Rose Stone explained to us that her brother — who was born Sylvester Stewart — took his stage name from his early DJ pseudonym: “That happened because Sly was a disc jockey, and you know how disc jockeys always want a different 'handle,' as they call it. And 'Sly Stone' was a cool name, it was a hip name, and it fit with the kind of personality that he had, and that he still has. 'Sly Stone: The hippest cat in the world' — y'know, one of those kind of guys. He was just a cool disc jockey.”
